The Visiting Artist Program at KyCAD was established in November 2009 to educate and foster greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary visual art through academic discourse, public lectures, performances, exhibitions, and other arts related programming for the benefit of Spalding University students and especially students enrolled in the KyCAD program, the greater Louisville community, and the state of Kentucky. The Visiting Artist Program seeks to invite innovative, nationally recognized artists from across the region and country to the Spalding University campus and balances community outreach with student engagement. The Visiting Artist Program will bring artists from multiple disciplines--photography, drawing, graphic design, and digital media--for fresh and disruptive voices to the 2017-2018 academic year. Our Visiting Artist Program is unique as it offers direct engagement with students via lunch lectures, critiques, and workshops but also offers direct service to the public through open gallery exhibitions and receptions of the visiting artist's work and through public lectures and performances where individuals in the 40203 neighborhood, metro-Louisville, and residents across the state of Kentucky are invited to attend.

This project is needed for continued community improvement in the 40203-zip code and for continued support of an arts culture in Louisville and Kentucky. In our research, we learned that only 15% of the population in this zip code has a Bachelor's degree and 18% in unemployed. By offering free access to art lectures and exhibitions, KyCAD enriches the neighborhood, metro-Louisville, and the state of Kentucky through a culture of inclusivity and integration. When we reviewed the U.S. Census Bureau's statistics for our neighborhood and state, we realized the larger impact our gallery and lectures can have by engaging more directly with our neighbors.

The Visiting Artist Program functions through an understanding that "artists create culture." KyCAD strives to enrich all lives in Louisville and Kentucky with a robust artistic community: In partnership with Louisville-area cultural institutions, the Visiting Artist Program promotes a necessary conversation about the value of an engaged art community. When we are connected to our neighbors a healthy dialogue rooted in artistic creation will continue to develop and our neighborhood will flourish.
